"Well, it stands to reason that they weren't always called the Ancients."
Daniel Jackson[src]

The Alterans were an advanced race that preceded the Ancients from the planet of Celestis in the Alteran Home Galaxy millions of years ago and were the first evolution of humanity,. Because of a philosophical disagreement however, they would eventually split into the fervently religious Ori, while the scientific minded Alterans fled to the Milky Way galaxy, which they called Avalon and became the Ancients.

History[]

"The Ori have amassed armies and move to destroy us. Everything we believe, all we are, is an affront to them. They will stop at nothing to destroy every last shred of evidence that opposes their fanaticism."
Amelius[src]

Tens, possibly even hundreds, of millions of years ago, the Alterans (the first evolution of humanity) lived together as one society in a distant galaxy along the evolutionary path to Ascension. However, a philosophical division soon emerged among the Alterans, dividing them into two races, known as the Ancients, who came to rely more heavily on science and rationality, and the Ori, who continued to become more and more fervent in their religious beliefs. Merlin indicated however, that when the Ori started out they had good intentions which had become corrupted.

Ultimately, the Ori became so extreme in their beliefs that the two sects split apart and began to oppose each other, culminating in the Ori attempting to wipe the Ancients out. The Alteran Ancients were too few in numbers, however, and were ultimately forced to hide their ways. Though they considered using their knowledge to defend themselves, they faced a war of attrition, one they ultimately believed that they could not win. To avoid genocide, the Alteran Ancients built a ship and left their home galaxy, while the Alteran Ori remained. After many thousands of years, the exiled Alterans discovered the Milky Way, where they would directly and indirectly influence much of galactic (and intergalactic) history. Because of the history between them the Alterans chose to hide their second evolution of humanity from the Ori. (SG1: "Avalon, Part 2", "Origin", "The Fourth Horseman, Part 1", "The Ark of Truth", "The Ultimate Visual Guide"). The Alterans created many ships designed to travel the universe and seed Stargates on habitable worlds, these seed ships would spend hundreds of thousands of years in and out of FTL jumping from solar system to solar system and on to the next Galaxy. The Alterans built the ship Destiny to follow behind the seed ships in order for the Alterans to be able to explore the Universe, they had on the ship a Stargate which needed a 9th Chevron dialed in order to connect (and extreme amounts of power).

After seeding the Milky Way Galaxy with humans the Alterans lived throughout the stars in many colonies throughout the new galaxy. The Alterans later succumbed to a terrible plague and left the Milky Way in the great Alteran city Atlantis, they flew their city equipped with a star drive to the Pegasus Galaxy where they seeded yet another Galaxy with the human race. After a time an insect like creature called the Aratis bug combined its DNA with Alterans and the race known as the Wraith evolved. As the Wraith evolved scientifically they posed a threat to the Alterans and humanity due to their peculiar food source, humans. The Wraith went to war against the Alterans and after many hundreds of years the Alterans lost colony after colony until only Atlantis remained. The Alterans sunk the city into the ocean of Lantea and left the Pegasus Galaxy for Earth, in the Milky Way, where they would blend and mix into the ancient cultures on earth. Afterwards, the Alterans Ascended and some would eventually decide to return to human and live out their life throughout the Milky Way.

The Alterans and the Ori later both Ascended and even on the higher plane the Ori were determined to destroy the Alterans, now known as the Ancients by primitive cultures. Once Ascended, the Alterans would rarely interfere in the happenings of the lower planes of existence, but would sometime allow exceptions such in the case of Morgana, where she assisted Daniel Jackson in the fight against the Ori. Later, the Ori were destroyed by Dr. Daniel Jackson with the help of Merlin and his weapon. SG-1 then used an Alteran device called the Ark of Truth, left behind in their old home at Ortus Mallum, to show the Ori followers the truth about their "gods" and end their crusade.

Philosophy[]

"We believe in the systematic understanding of the physical world through observation and experimentation, through argument and debate, but, most of all, freedom of will."
―Alteran Woman[src]

The Alterans believed in science, reason, and logic. Knowledge and enlightenment were fundamental to their world view. They believed that the universe was to be studied, and that scientific experimentation was essential to gaining understanding. Most importantly, the Alterans believed in free will. To them, the right to believe whatever a person wants is more important than anything else. This has been to their detriment, however, as it has been that very belief in free will that forced them to respect the rights of the Ori in believing their fanaticism. They also believed that they did not have the right to restrict the freedom of the followers of Origin to believe in the Ori by "brainwashing" the true nature of the Ori into their followers for much the same reasons.

Technology[]

The Alterans, being one of the first forms of sentient life to evolve in the universe had developed many advanced forms of technology before they left their galaxy. Ranging from advanced healing technologies, and long-range communication devices, the Alterans were one of the most advanced races in the known universe. They had also developed intergalactic hyperdrive technology long before sentient life had developed on Earth. Another piece of technology they created and ultimately abandoned was the Ark of Truth, a device meant to brainwash the Ori's followers into believing the truth, but abandoned it as they believed it was unethical.

The early technology of the Alterans was mechanical in nature as seen on board the Destiny starship, but later would develop into crystal computing and less mechanical in nature. The Alterans had several space ships ranging from Puddle Jumpers to Orion-Class warships and even the numerous cities capable of interstellar travel including Atlantis. The Stargate was the main piece of technology that the Alterans used to travel the Galaxy and had short range transporters called Rings that would transport you between ships or planets. In the Alteran city of Atlantis the city had numerous Transporters in order to ease travel throughout the massive city.

Physiology[]

Although the Alterans are human in appearance, their physiology is much more advanced, with a heightened intellect and capacity to store knowledge. It has been suggested by not only Dr. Carson Beckett, but also the Alterans (specifically Janus) themselves, that the human Alterans, those who would later become the Ancients and the Ori, were the first evolution of humanity. It has also been implied that the current human species evolved as such due to the actions of the Alterans and the Ori, since two species progressing along identical evolutionary paths is virtually impossible. The Alterans later created a "second evolution" of their species, in both the Milky Way and Pegasus Galaxy, and it is also likely that the Ori created their own second evolution in their home galaxy to serve as worshipers of the Origin faith.

Towards the end of their evolutionary development, but still before they ascended, the Alterans developed numerous advanced and varied abilities, such as:

These abilities are varied between individuals. Usually not all the abilities listed are present in one individual, but are all potentially possible, including abilities not yet known. The Alterans did create devices which can transfer all or some of these powers to an individual without causing them to ascend, such as Merlin's version of the Repository of knowledge.
