Antarctica is the southernmost continent on Earth, primarily made up of ice and snow. It was the home to Atlantis before some of the Ancients migrated to the Pegasus Galaxy. Its outpost still remained, and was home to the planet's original Stargate. Major Sheppard has said that he liked Antarctica, though General O'Neill has opposite opinions.

[edit] History

Antarctica was the place the Ancients stationed Atlantis. When they departed, they left behind the original, and far more ancient, Stargate. When Jack O'Neill and Samantha Carter emerged through the beta gate, they believed they had been transported to an ice planet. (SG1: "Solitudes")

After discovering the Stargate in Antarctica, a research team was set up to determine the impact of this information against current knowledge of the Ancients and the gate network. This team only found the remains of two Jaffa, and for roughly five years were relatively unsuccessful in discovering anything that related to the theories which had been formulated.

Almost ready to pack up and return to the United States, the research team discovered the preserved body of what was later to be recognized as a frozen being of the first Ancient race, or so it was believed. (SG1: "Frozen")

Not two years later, SG-1 uncovered the Atlantis outpost, the remaining station where the lost city of Atlantis once existed.

Antarctica was the location of the final battle of Earth's forces against Anubis. This confrontation left the most powerful Goa'uld force in the galaxy defeated. With Anubis disposed for the time being, talks were formed with eleven countries around Earth about the Antarctica treaty and its relation to the scientific research that was to be conducted by the United States of America, lead by Elizabeth Weir, and members of Stargate Command, including Daniel Jackson. (SG1: "Lost City, Part 1")

John Sheppard likes it in Antarctica, something which shocked both General O'Neill and Dr. Jackson. (ATL: "Rising")
