[edit] History

[edit] Before contact with Atlantis

At one point, the Athosians were possibly a technologically advaced race, with such technologies as the Athosian fire starter and lived in cities. However, they were, like all humans in the galaxy were periodically culled by the Wraith and they were once almost completely wiped out during the Great Attack, which forced them to abandon city living and now live as farmers. They are known as traders, since they travel to other planets and trade in information, goods and manpower regarding agriculture.

[edit] Living with the Atlantis Expedition

The Athosians were the first race of people encountered by the Atlantis Expedition. However, their first contact was short lived when the Wraith arrived and culled the planet. The Athosians were forced to abandon Athos and lived with the Tau'ri in Atlantis. However, some of the expedition members don't trust them and most Athosians felt unwelcomed. Later Sheppard and Ford discovered land on Lantea, and they all moved to make settlement in the mainland. They built a new village and grew crops for themselves and the expedition to replenish their food shortage.

Despite living on the mainland, they still had to be frequently evacuated to Atlantis in emergencies such as the arrival of Wraith ships and when a superstorm struck the planet. Eventually, when the Lanteans arrived back to Atlantis to temporarily retake control of the city, they were moved to a new planet, later named New Athos where they rebuilt their society yet again. However, after Atlantis 1 retook the city after an Asuran attack, the Athosians decided to stay on New Athos.

[edit] Missing

In 2007, Teyla Emmagan and Jennifer Keller arrived in New Athos and discovered that the Athosian village was abandoned. They were later shocked to discover that the Wraith kidnapped all the Athosians and taken them. The Atlantis expedition assumed they were culled and spend some time looking for them. Later they find out that they were all taken by Michael Kenmore for his own purposes. A lot of them were transformed into half-Wraith. The Atlantis teams manages to rescue all the Athosians who were still 100% human, but the half-Wraiths and a pregnant Teyla were still taken by Michael. It is yet unclear what happened to the rescued Athosians, whether they stayed on New Athos, or taken back to Atlantis.

[edit] Culture

The Athosians are a peaceful, welcoming and spiritual race of humans. They often refer to the Ancients as Ancestors (possibly as their deities), people who bought them into the universe, which the Ancients did. They often pray and meditate, in dedication to them. Other aspects of their culture includes;

  • As a greeting, farewell and even appreciation, two individuals often lean their foreheads to each other. This was shown many times. (ATL: "Rising")
  • Dying from natural causes are rare among their people, since many die in the hands of the Wraith. Each person who passes away of old age are often honoured with the Ring Ceremony, to prepare them for the afterlife. (ATL: "Critical Mass")
  • Every morning before dawn, they have stout tea to brace them for the coming day. (ATL: "Rising")
  • One popular dish among the Athosians is Tuttleroot soup. (ATL: "The Gift")
  • A popular beverage is called Ruus Wine. According to Sheppard, he described the wine as "tasty stuff, but with one hell of a kick." (ATL: "Missing")
  • According to Teyla, the Athosians take a period of rest every four days. (ATL: "Sunday")
  • As a "rite of passage", young Athosians would be left abandoned in the forests and were left there alone for 10 days to learn how to fend for themselves later in life. (ATL: "Missing")
