"I have spent 133 years worshiping false gods. No more!"
―Bra'tac

Bra'tac of Chulak is Teal'c of Chulak's former Jaffa Master who still is his ongoing teacher and friend. Teal'c also considers him to be like a father for him, and Bra'tac is known to be an honorable and decent man.

He was previously First Prime of the Goa'ulds Apophis and Klorel before finally defecting and officially joining the Jaffa Rebellion which he did so in June 1998.

Originally untrusting and suspicious of the Tau'ri, notably SG-1, Bra'tac has since gone on to become one of Stargate Command's closest allies, often assisting SG-1 in various missions while providing the SGC with knowledge of the Goa'uld.

Biography

Background information

Bratac

Bra'tac when he was a First Prime

Bra'tac was once the First Prime of Apophis, a position his future pupil Teal'c would later assume. Bra'tac was 133 years old when SG-1 first met him and was therefore born around 1864. He is often pointing out his age, which hints that old age is considered to be of great value to the Jaffa. He has known his whole life, if not most of it, that the Goa'uld were not gods (the truth of which was taught to him by his father), and so he privately renounced any loyalty his people are supposed to give to them and began a quest to rid them from the galaxy.

Some time after Cronus killed his First Prime, Teal'c's father, Ronac, and banished Teal'c and his mother to Chulak, Teal'c vowed to become First Prime of Apophis and was taken under the wing of Bra'tac, who was Apophis' First Prime at the time. Bra'tac planted the seeds of doubt about the Goa'uld in Teal'c's mind. Teal'c later married Drey'auc, and had a son, Rya'c.

On the day Teal'c left Chulak, Bra'tac told him “Draw from your past, but do not let your past draw from you.” Teal'c quoted this to Colonel Samantha Carter as she prepared to leave Stargate Command for Atlantis as leader of the expedition there. (SGA: "Reunion")

When he first met the Tau'ri, which Teal'c had joined forces with to fight the Goa'uld, Bra'tac was initially suspicious of the humans of Earth, particularly Colonel Jack O'Neill, but Bra'tac slowly learnt to trust and respect the Tau'ri. He assisted them in acquiring a Prim'ta for Rya'c and allowed them to escape back to Earth through the Stargate. He then stayed on Chulak and looked after Rya'c and Drey'auc. (SG1: "Bloodlines")

Bra'tac managed to regain his position as First Prime but this time for Klorel and joined Apophis' attack force to Earth. He had hoped to attack Apophis' Ha'tak with Klorel's, so that infighting would begin, enabling Earth's "ships" to attack. But when SG-1 killed Klorel, he placed him in the Sarcophagus. He then freed SG-1 and was informed of the C-4 that was planted on Klorel's Ha'tak. They then took Klorel hostage and brought the two ships closer together. They ringed aboard Apophis' Hatak and destroyed the Pel'tak so the ships could not be separated. They then made their way to the Goa'uld shield generator and destroyed it with Fragmentation grenades. This allowed the blast from Klorel's ship to destroy both. They escaped the vessels' destruction on Death Gliders, but the blast badly damaged the gliders and set them adrift in orbit. They were later rescued by Space shuttle Endeavour.

After being interviewed, Bra'tac presumably returned to Chulak later, now officially armed with a GDO that SG-1 had given him. (SG1: "The Serpent's Lair")

Later on Bra'tac traveled to Earth using the GDO SG-1 had given him. He later informed Teal'c, SG-1 and Hammond that Apophis was still alive and he had kidnapped Rya'c. He and SG-1 ventured to Chulak and go to the home Fro'tak, Drey'auc's new husband. Jack O'Neill, however was forced to kill Fro'tak after learning that Fro'tak planned on betraying them to Apophis which left Bra'tac stunned. They were able to free him. Drey'auc and Rya'c were taken to Earth with Teal'c and he remained on Chulak. (SG1: "Family")

When SG-1 was captured by Hathor, Teal'c left Stargate Command and returned to Chulak. He discovered Bra'tac in his home, badly beaten and near death from an attack from Jaffa loyal to Apophis after he had openly revealed the truth about the Goa'uld to get the people to rebel against them. After he recovered, he helped Teal'c gather Jaffa to lead a rescue mission. When Major General George S. Hammond arrived to recruit his own rescue mission, he led them to the Needle Threader which Teal'c and Hammond used to travel to Eskal. After they destroyed the Sentry gun posts, he and a small group of Jaffa came through the Gate and killed the Jaffa guarding it, including Trofsky. (SG1: "Into the Fire")

After Apophis escaped from Netu and attacked Chulak, he fled to Stargate Command with Moac, his new apprentice. Dr. Janet Fraiser attempted to save Moac but he died of wounds. Later he accompanied SG-1 to find the Harcesis child (Shifu) on Kheb. When he met the Kheb Monk, Bra'tac is presented with the idea of Ascension but is told he must remove his symbiote to do so. In the end, he decides against this possibility for himself with the encounter having given Bra'tac renewed determination to stop the Goa'uld once and for all. When Teal'c was captured and brainwashed by Apophis, Bra'tac was sent for by SG-1 and greeted Teal'c. He was able to see Teal'c was deceiving them and still believed Apophis was a true god. Bra'tac then removed Teal'c's symbiote to perform the Rite of M'al Sharran. Fortunately, Teal'c was able to overcome his brainwashing and his symbiote was returned to him. (SG1: "Enemies", "Threshold")

Bra'tac and Teal'c wanted SG-1 to meet the charismatic K'tano and form an alliance with the Tau'ri. When Yu told Teal'c that K'tano was actually Imhotep, Teal'c challenged K'tano to Joma secu, which Imhotep quickly took control of, but after revealing himself, Teal'c killed Imhotep. (SG1: "The Warrior")

When Drey'auc's symbiote matured, Bra'tac informed Teal'c against her wish. They traveled to the Jaffa camp but it was too late. After Drey'auc's funeral, Shaq'rel arrived in a Tel'tak and informed them that Earth was under attack from Anubis' Stargate destroyer. He was able to discover the location of the planet by dialing many of Anubis' planets and not being able to establish a wormhole to the attacking planet. He, Shaq'rel, Teal'c and Rya'c traveled to this world in the Tel'tak. Once they arrived in the system they were attacked by Anubis' Death Gliders even though they were cloaked. They then ringed to the surface and Shaq'rel fled the system. They were attacked as soon as they reached the surface by a contingent of Jaffa. They managed to defeat the Jaffa but Rya'c was injured in the fight. He and Teal'c attempted to reach the device on foot but were captured and taken before Anubis' Jaffa commander. Rya'c stole a Death Glider and used it to free them and destroy the device. They were then picked up by Shaq'rel and traveled to Earth. (SG1: "Redemption, Part 1", "Redemption, Part 2")

Bratac 5

He was present at the Alpha Site when Anubis attacked the Tok'ra base in the Risa system and several Tok'ra evacuated there. After Ocker was murdered he convinced Artok to be tested with the Za'tarc detector and tested positive. After Antok was also murdered, he discovered the footprints of Anubis' Ashrak leading into the woods. He was paired with Malek during the search of the forest. They were attacked and he was dragged away and left to die. After regaining consciousnesses, he returned to the base in time to shoot the Ashrak in the back with his staff weapon. (SG1: "Allegiance")

Bra'tac was a major leader to the Jaffa Rebellion, a rebellion aimed at overthrowing the Goa'uld and establishing the freedom of all Jaffa. At one time he and the resistance were attacked by the Goa'uld in a surprise attack and his larval symbiote died. He was kept alive by Teal'c by sharing Junior. He was then taken to Stargate Command but they were unable to transplant a new symbiote into either him or Teal'c, Junior having been pushed to the brink of death from the effort needed to sustain both men which ultimately resulted in Junior dying. The Tok'ra offered to help and Jacob Carter began treating him with the drug Tretonin, which he continues to receive regular doses of. (SG1: "The Changeling")

Bra'tac and Rya'c on Erebus

He was captured when he went with Rya'c to Erebus, a Jaffa penal colony, to recruit more allies for the Jaffa Rebellion. They were forced into hard labor, Bra'tac being forced to carefully ration his supply of Tretonin. While ascended, Dr. Daniel Jackson saw them and the memory came back to him after he descended. SG-1 went to rescue them- arriving just after Bra'tac had exhausted the last of his Tretonin supply, although he stated that he could survive without it as long as he had to-, but the rescue attempt was unsuccessful. Teal'c was captured and hurt but was able to get him a supply of Tretonin. Rya'c helped spread the word among the prisoners to revolt and the second rescue attempt was successful. (SG1: "Orpheus")

Bratac 6

He and Teal'c traveled to the planet that Ramius and Tilgath had set to meet to form an alliance. They found Tilgath dead and many dead Jaffa. An injured Ramius' First Prime told them that one warrior was responsible and Ramius barely escaped through the Stargate. They were then attacked by the Kull warrior who killed the First Prime. They shoot it several times with a Staff weapon and a Zat'nik'tel until it collapsed. They brought the warriors' body back to Stargate Command. Major Samantha Carter and Jacob Carter determined the Kull armor completely protected it from energy weapons and that it died of a Heart attack not of their weapons fire. He, SG-1, and SG-3 traveled to Ramius' homeworld in an attempt to capture a Kull warrior. They were unsuccessful in their attempt and captured by Ramius' Jaffa. He and the others were freed by Ramius' Jaffa guard after the warrior killed Ramius and they escaped. Later, he flew the Tel'tak to Tartarus and dropped Carter and Teal'c off and hid to avoid detection. After the completed their mission, they fled to the Tel'tak but they were followed by many Kull warriors and one boarded the ship. It shot Teal'c in the side and knocked Carter to the ground, it chased Jacob to the back and he used the Transportation rings to eject it from the ship and they traveled back to Earth. He came to Stargate Command to warn Earth that Anubis would attack in three days. He traveled to Chulak with Teal'c to gather forces to help defend the planet. They met Ronan who was in possession of a Tel'tak. They used it to travel to Proclarush Taonas in search of the Lost City of the Ancients. Once there, SG-1 ringed down to the outpost and found a Zero Point Module and learned that the city was located on Earth. As he was about to ring them back, he was betrayed by Ronan, an agent of Anubis, who stabbed him in the symbiote pouch. Fortunately, he no longer carries a symbiote and was able to kill Ronan and ring SG-1 aboard. He was healed by Colonel Jack O'Neill with his Ancient healing power. They traveled to Earth and found the outpost in Antarctica. He stayed on the Tel'tak and watched as Drone weapons destroyed Anubis' fleet. (SG1: "Lost City, Part 1", "Lost City, Part 2")

He traveled with Teal'c to Hak'tyl to check in with Ishta and the Hak'tyl Resistance. They discovered that Rya'c was set to be married. He attempted to mediate the situation and get Teal'c and Rya'c to talk. After Teal'c and Ishta went missing on Hak'tyl ll, he assisted Brigadier General Jack O'Neill in quieting the Hak'tyl Resistance so Dr. Daniel Jackson can explain the situation. Later, he officiated the wedding between Rya'c and Kar'yn. (SG1: "Sacrifices")

He and SG-1 were on a mission to ambush one of Amaterasu's Ha'taks but the ship had been taken over by Replicators. The Replicators managed to board their Ha'tak and beam away Dr. Daniel Jackson. The rest of the team ringed to the surface and escaped to Stargate Command through the Stargate. When the ranks of the Jaffa Rebellion began going back to the Goa'uld, Bra'tac and Teal'c convinced the other members of the Jaffa Rebellion to attack Dakara in an ultimately successful mission. After Ba'al disengaged his fleet from the battle with the Replicators, he and Teal'c took the fleet in orbit to prepare for battle with Ba'al's fleet. They engaged Ba'al's fleet until the Replicator fleet arrived. They joined forces with Ba'al's fleet to hold off the Replicators until Lt. Colonel Samantha Carter and Jacob Carter activated the Dakara superweapon to destroy all the Replicators. After the weapon was activated, he boarded Ba'al's flagship and attempted to kill him but he beamed away. The Goa'uld Empire fell and the Jaffa finally obtained their freedom. Bra'tac and Teal'c, who were major figures in the freeing of Jaffa, were knighted Blood Kin to all Jaffa, the highest honor that can be bestowed on any Jaffa. (SG1: "Reckoning, Part 1", "Reckoning, Part 2", "Threads")

Bratac stronghold

As a member of Jaffa High Council

Bra'tac becomes a leader of the Progressive faction of the Jaffa High Council of the newly formed Free Jaffa Nation. He opposed Gerak's motion to have Origin taught to all Jaffa. He and Teal'c gathered a group to stand in opposition to the Jaffa Nation following the Ori. Gerak threatened to destroy them if they did not follow Origin but could not bring himself to kill fellow Jaffa. Gerak meet with Teal'c on the surface of Chulak and Teal'c convinced him the Ori were no better than the Goa'uld. (SG1: "The Fourth Horseman, Part 1", "The Fourth Horseman, Part 2")

During the debate to dissolve the Jaffa High Council, Ka'lel and Maz'rai switched their votes and he became suspicious. When Teal'c disappeared, he confronted U'kin and discovered he had been brainwashed. He then confronted Maz'rai believing he was brainwashed as well. Although Maz'rai asked them to leave, Bra'tac was able to get through to him and he preformed the Rite of M'al Sharran on himself. He died but not before writing down the name of Ka'lel. He followed Ka'lel to P2M-903 and contacted Stargate Command and they sent troops through the Stargate while he flew an Al'kesh for cover. The Al'kesh was shot down by Death Gliders and he was captured by Jaffa. He was brought before Ba'al who ordered Teal'c to kill him. Fortunately, Teal'c was faking his allegiance to Ba'al and shot him with the Staff weapon. He and Teal'c then escaped to the surface of the planet. (SG1: "Stronghold")

After the Battle of P3Y-229, he traveled to Stargate Command to inform Major General Henry Landry that the battle did not go well. He then returned to Dakara and gathered three Ha'taks to investigate. When he arrived, he informed the Lucian Alliance Ha'taks surrounding the Odyssey that if they did not stand down they would face them in battle. They retreated and he boarded the Odyssey. There he was informed that the Ori warships dropped out of hyperspace above Chulak. He and SG-1 traveled to Chulak and tried to use the rings to get a Jaffa grenade through the shield. It was unsuccessful and he intended to ram the Ori warship with the Ha'tak. Fortunately, the Odyssey arrived and beamed them off the ship before it impacted the shield and escaped to hyperspace. (SG1: "Flesh and Blood")

He traveled to Stargate Command to warn Major General Henry Landry that the new leader of the Jaffa High Council, Se'tak, had used the Dakara superweapon to attack the Ori. He then traveled to Dakara with Landry to confront Se'tak. Unable to convince him to stop, they fled back to Earth before Adria destroyed Dakara with an Ori warship. (SG1: "Counterstrike")

Bratac 10

Some time after the destruction of Dakara by the Ori, leaders of the Free Jaffa Nation met to consider the future on Dar Eshkalon, but Bra'tac and Teal'c were badly injured during an ambush by Arkad, a former enemy of Teal'c. After he was found by SG-1 and treated by Dr. Carolyn Lam, he was unconscious for two weeks. After Teal'c killed Arkad, he told Teal'c that he was like a son to him. (SG1: "Talion")

Alternate realities

Alternate timelines

  • In an alternate timeline created by Ba'al, Bra'tac likewise served as Teal'c's Jaffa Master during his youth. The Cameron Mitchell of the proper timeline used this piece of information to convince Teal'c that they had known each other before history had been altered. It is possible that the Bra'tac of this timeline served Ba'al rather than Apophis, as did Teal'c. (Stargate: Continuum)

Notes

Wiki2
Stargate Wiki has a collection of images related to Bra'tac of Chulak.
  • Bra'tac appeared in every season of Stargate SG-1 with the exception of Season 4.
  • Bra'tac first thought Earth's space shuttles were warships. (SG1: "The Serpent's Lair")
  • Bra'tac was always older than Teal'c by 30 or so years until the events of the episode "Unending" where Teal'c had aged 50 years. Now technically, Teal'c is older than his master Bra'tac and is now the one to be called "old man."
