The Dark Ages is a term for a period in Earth history between the collapse of the Roman Empire in the 5th century and the beginning of the High Middle Ages in the 10th-11th centuries. During this period large areas of the continent of Europe became politically fragmented and suffered a decline in population, trade and quality of life. After SG-1 rescued a group of Tollans from their homeworld following severe volcanic eruptions on the planet, Dr. Daniel Jackson suggests that if it were not for this set back, the Tau'ri would probably have colonized space before 1998, and developed technology that rivaled the Tollans.
