Ernest Littlefield was a scientist that worked with Professor Langford on experimenting on the Stargate in 1945. While working on the project, he met Langford's daughter Catherine, and the two fell in love. Eventually, Langford and Littlefield were able to make the gate work, and Littlefield went through it to Heliopolis, discovering a meeting place for the Alliance of Four Great Races. However, the DHD was damaged, and he was unable to dial home, and remained trapped there for fifty years. In 1997, SG-1 was dispatched to rescue him after Daniel Jackson studied old tapes of the experiments and learned the truth about what had happened. Their reasons for travelling there were twofold; Daniel felt that they had an obligation to rescue Ernest, a true American hero for being the first person to go through the Stargate, and, with the discovery that the Stargate address Ernest had visited wasn't on the Abydos cartouche, Teal'c noted that it was likely the address could offer them advanced technology that the Goa'uld were unaware of.
Having arrived on Ernest's planet and convinced him that they were real and not hallucinations, Samantha Carter was able to temporarily jump-start the Stargate using a lightning strike. Ernest and Catherine decided to spend the remainder of their lives together. (SG1: "The Torment of Tantalus")
[edit] Note
- Paul McGillion, who played the young Ernest, went on to play the main character of Doctor Carson Beckett in Stargate Atlantis.
