The AIM-120A Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile is a Tau'ri weapon first installed on various aircraft, but were later integrated into fighter spacecraft of their design. For some unknown reason, only this model of AMRAAM was ever used by the Stargate Program (despite the AIM-120A being out of production since the early 90's, having been replaced by the AIM-120B in 1994, and even further obsoleted by the AIM-120C in 1996). It also somehow retained full functionality in a vacuum without any modification. (As the acronym implies all models of the AMRAAM design rely on an atmosphere for directional control, hence the prominent winglets; furthermore they were not built with space-rated hardware.) The X-301 Interceptor was the first of these spacecraft to carry it, with a complement of two missiles which were used in a plan to slingshot the craft around Jupiter using the planet's own gravity. The plan failed as the missiles provided insufficient thrust to move the craft. (SG1: "Tangent")
The missiles were later fitted onto the F-302 fighter-interceptors, where they first saw significant use on that platform in the Battle of Antarctica. Though successful in previous dogfights, their effectiveness varied against Wraith Darts. During a battle above Area 51, a number of missiles were intercepted by enemy weapons fire before impacting their target. Lieutenant Colonel John Sheppard managed to use a missile to blast his way into the Super-hive however, allowing him to destroy from the inside with a nuclear weapon. (SGA: "Enemy at the Gate")
