Zero Point Module

A Zero Point Module, often abbreviated ZPM, is power source, created by the Ancients, capable of supplying tremendous amounts of energy. It is one of the most powerful power sources known to exist, having been developed by the Ancients several million years ago during their original habitation of the Milky Way galaxy.

Visually, a Zero Point Module resembles a large, translucent group of primarily orange-colored crystals approximately two feet in height with a roughly cylindrical shape. When activated, a ZPM emits a yellow glow from its center, with a small red circle at the top of illuminating once the device has been fully engaged. This illumination ceases once the ZPM has been disconnected from whatever it was powering or has become fully depleted. The device itself serves as an enclosure for an artificially created pocket of subspace-time. Zero point energy is extracted from this pocket until it reaches maximum entropy, at which point the pocket collapses, leaving behind a useless shell.

Like many types of Ancient technology, Zero Point Modules are crystal-based. The crystals that compose the shell of the ZPM are similar in many ways to the crystals adapted by the Goa'uld and Tok'ra: red crystals contain the necessary programs to allow ZPMs to provide power to Ancient technology when a ZPM is interfaced with a conduit, while yellow crystals act as a buffer to prevent catastrophic overload. The crystals of a ZPM are virtually indestructible and can remain functional for hundreds of thousands of years. (Read more...)

About Stargate
Stargate (DVD)

Stargate is a military science fiction franchise, initially conceived by Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin. The film that began the franchise was simply titled Stargate. Theatrically released on October 28, 1994 by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Carolco, it became a worldwide hit, grossing nearly $200 million (USD) worldwide. Three years later, Canadian Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner created a television series entitled Stargate SG-1 as a sequel for the film. Stargate SG-1 briefly held the record for the longest-running North American science fiction show in history with a total of ten seasons and 214 episodes. This series would set the scene for Stargate's ongoing legacy.

Stargate The Ark of Truth (DVD)
In 2004, Stargate SG-1's first spin-off series, entitled Stargate: Atlantis, was released. Stargate: Atlantis concluded January 9, 2009 after five seasons and 100 episodes. A second Stargate spin-off series, entitled Stargate Universe, began airing on October 2, 2009 and concluded after 2 seasons. As of May 9, 2011, with the series finale of Stargate Universe, no new episodes of the Stargate franchise are planned for production, leaving the franchise with a total of 354 canon episodes. However, On May 29, 2014, Warner Brothers and MGM announced plans to reboot the Stargate franchise in the form in a new feature film trilogy. (Read more...)
