Forum:History of Stargate
From SGCommand
Isn't it crazy the length of time that the Stargate franchise has prevailed. I mean, I'm here at Stargate Wiki and I see articles from another time; Articles created years and years ago by a completely different staff of dedicated editors who were documenting the Stargate series at its infancy. And, now, here we are 15 years after the movie that made it all happen. I search through article and, occasionally, I happend to see one related to the first or second season of Stargate SG1. Then, it was a truely different show... completely. Now, we sit here 10 years after those first SG-1 episodes aired and see Stargate Universe, in which the majority of the main cast of SG-1 is... "old" (RDA). It is just... thought provoking. I mean, even after editing the Prometheus article, it seems like it's an article about something that happened long ago and that will never be mentioned again. All of those "good-ole" SG-1 topics (naquadria, X-301, being really confused about what's happening on a weekly basis) all of those are forever gone and replaced with an entirely new and different series that, if you were to compare Emancipation and Light and not be shown the titles of the 2 shows you were watching, you could easily think that they are completely different shows.
I just started thinking about all of this after editing the naquadria article and then the article about the Ke'ra. And, probably, you all think I'm really weird now. Well, weirder than a person that would spend his time at a place like this and have sooo many contributions about something that (no matter how interesting/"though provoking" it is) is just fiction.—Anubis 10545 (talk) (Contribs) 07:39, October 25, 2009 (UTC)
- Here's the dealio my friend, editing this wiki is a hobby and no weirder than any other hobby. Some people spend thousands of hours building models and miniatures, some (read: MANY) people have logged (literally) hundreds of days inside World of Warcraft. This is what we choose to do with our time, and bonus *it's free!*. There's tons of creepier and more expensive "hobbies" out there, but this is where we choose to spend our time.
- But about the time thing, this site is relatively new, compared to the franchise. It began in 2005, around the end of season 8 of SG-1. And the only people that are really affected by the passing time are the people involved in the show, like RDA. All you have to do is pop the DVD of Window of Opportunity in and watch it today and suddenly Jack and Teal'c are juggling (and skinny). But for RDA that was 15 years ago. It's already been months since the cast and crew filmed Light, that's old news, they're at a freakin' wrap party tonight and about to go on holiday, uncertain if there will be a season two. It struck me as surreal when I went to FanExpo in Toronto and shook Lou Ferrigno's hand. That dude is OLD and his hand felt OLD. But he's the Hulk, he should have crushed my hand in the baseball mitt he calls a hand and shattered my entire arm as we greeted. I congratulated him on "I Love You Man", but as new as it was for me, having just watched it, his experience with that movie ended a year ago. Anyways I'm a rambling windbag so I digress.
- Side note: I played WoW for two years, from 2005-07. I can't remember exactly how long I spent in-game, but I believe it was somewhere around 100 days. That haunts me. Early this year, I used a 10 day free pass to see the new expansion and found a lot of the people I used to play with had never stopped playing. Two of them, who met in game, were getting married. I still don't consider that weird, just...hardcore. We, and everyone over at Gateworld and Joe's blog, we're just hardcore Stargate fans, albeit with less marriages resulting. Cheers.

Man... I don't know what I was on when I wrote that. Probably my half-asleep state contributed 'cuz looking back on it now... . Although, it might just be that Syfy hasn't been running Atlantis or SG-1 weeknights because they're running Halloween movies (Stargate withdraw). But, what I mean is... well, now I'm not exactly sure. It's just weird to think that they're running Stargate still.... but it's almost not Stargate... and so it seems weird to watch, kind of. —Anubis 10545 (talk) (Contribs) 17:41, October 25, 2009 (UTC)
- lol I know what you mean. It was 4:00 am when I wrote that response and I had to login today to reread what I wrote. Stargate SG-1 holds the Guinness world record for the longest consecutively running Sci-fi show, longer than any of the Star Trek series. Then there's Atlantis, and (god willing) many seasons of SGU. So it has some staying power.

- "Permission to barge in Sir"... I Agree with Anubis' half-asleep rant at the top, even though i enjoy SG-1 ten times more than any of the other spin-off's. It's like The Simposons, if you go back and watch Season 1 it's Visual quality is almost laughable... but there is a certain nostalgia to it that can't be ignored. I think the same with SG-1 even looking back at the first season, i can rewatch the first say 4 or 5 seasons over and over and not get sick of them, simply because the show is just that good. I didn't like the original movie very much, was a bit too deep and meaningful for my liking, then again i have to admit i had a bit of a cry when Daniel died at the end of S5 so i guess i'm a bit of a softy :P...To me it's a credit to the film-makers and the actors when they invoke any emotion at all, whether its funny or sad or makes you angry at the character (*cough* Kinsey), but hey i guess i'm the rambling windbag now :)
