"In the Line of Duty" is the second episode of the second season of Stargate SG-1.

Synopsis[]

While on an evacuation mission, a symbiote takes Captain Samantha Carter as its host and makes its way to Earth in order to leave for another planet. However, the rest of the team finds out and arrests her. She tells the team that she is a member of the legendary Tok'ra and that an Ashrak (Goa'uld assassin) is sent to kill her, forcing the SG-1 team into a desperate race against time to find and stop the Ashrak before it's too late.

Plot[]

The planet Nasya is in chaos as the Goa'uld launch an attack, some of the Goa'uld ships killing Nasyans, but luckily, a group of SGC personnel and SG-1 are there.

As the SGC personnel fire back at the ships, SG-1 participate in ensuring that everyone gets back through the Stargate safely.

On the way back to the gate, Captain Samantha Carter stops to give CPR to Quinta, a fallen villager. He suddenly grabs her head and something enters her mouth.

Assassination of Jolinar of Malkshur 3

Carter possessed by a Goa'uld symbiote, but actually a Tok'ra symbiote

Gagging, Carter spits on the ground before glancing up, her eyes glowing as it's revealed that she has been possessed by a Goa'uld symbiote.

Carter returns through the gate and tries to act as normal as possible, though through the mission debriefing, her comrades notice something is different about her.

Dr. Janet Fraiser invites her to come check on the Nasyans, many of whom have been moved to the hospital at the nearby Air Force Academy.

Finally, she goes to visit Cassandra Fraiser, and the young girl senses that Carter has been taken by a Goa'uld. She locks herself into Dr. Fraiser's office and demands to see Colonel Jack O'Neill.

Meanwhile, one of the badly burned refugees assaults Dr. Jacobs and emerges from his bandages fully recovered. He is an Ashrak, a Goa'uld hired assassin.

Cassandra convinces O'Neill that Carter was infected, and he takes action. When he injects Carter with a serum that "would bring down an elephant", the Goa'uld inside her becomes active and demands the Stargate be activated. Carter is apprehended and put behind bars at Stargate Command. The Goa'uld reveals itself to be Jolinar of Malkshur, and demands release. The parasite even promises to return Carter to them, fully restored to who she was. O'Neill does not budge. Suddenly, Carter's personality emerges and begs O'Neill to believe Jolinar but he takes it as a Goa'uld trick.

Finally, Jolinar reveals that she is a member of the Tok'ra, a group of rebel Goa'uld who oppose the System Lords and seek power for good. They are the most hated enemies of the System Lords, who constantly chase down any leads in an attempt to infiltrate and destroy them. She also explains that the System Lords will not allow the Tau'ri to thrive and become a threat. Already, a far more powerful attack is being planned. Teal'c, at least, is convinced. Jolinar talks with Dr. Daniel Jackson and tells him she knows where Sha're is.

When the Ashrak finally locates his victim, Jolinar, Carter suffers torture and almost death at his hands. The hunter is found, and Teal'c finally kills him with two shots from a Zat'nik'tel, also stunning Daniel in the process.

Meanwhile, Carter is fighting for her life in the infirmary. When she recovers, she tells O'Neill that Jolinar has given its life to save hers.

A while later, Fraiser brings Cassandra to the SGC infirmary, where Cassandra tells Sam that she's going to be okay as Jack, Fraiser and Daniel look on.

Notable quotes[]

O'Neill: Janet says you've been a little upset since Sam was here. What happened?
Cassandra: She said she'd kill me if I told.
O'Neill: You don't mean "kill you" kill you? Oh, I doubt that.
Cassandra: She said she would.
O'Neill: Cass, Sam loves you. She'd never do anything to hurt you.
Cassandra: She would now.
O'Neill: Why?
Cassandra: She's a Goa'uld.

Teal'c: Are you injured?
Jackson: Dumb question. But thank you. I think.
Teal'c: You are welcome.
Jackson: Just don't ever do that again.

Teal'c: Assault the Goa'uld's ego. Make him appear foolish. He may then reveal things simply to make himself appear more powerful.
O'Neill: Ah, come on Teal'c. They're smarter than that.
Teal'c: I have seen many Goa'uld strategies revealed and certain victories lost, simply because of Goa'uld arrogance. It is the Goa'uld's greatest weakness.

Carter: Not all Goa'uld are the same. There are a few that oppose the System Lords and their ways. You must have heard of the Tok'ra.
Teal'c: Every Goa'uld seeks power for his own reason and would betray his own brother to achieve it.
Carter: Some seek power for a greater purpose. Not every Goa'uld is an enemy to the people of this planet. The Tok'ra are real. No matter what Apophis has told you.
Teal'c: I have yet to meet one.
Carter: You have now. I am Jolinar of Malkshur.

Teal'c: There is an old legend among the Jaffa, forbidden to speak of, concerning a group of Goa'uld who oppose the ways of the System Lords. This group is called the Tok'ra. This Goa'uld, Jolinar of Malkshur, claims to be part of that group.
O'Neill: Can you be sure he is who he says he is?
Teal'c: I cannot.
Carter: Unfortunately, we do not carry identification.
O'Neill: Okay, let's try to build a little trust here, shall we? One of the Nasyans we brought back was very badly burned. But somehow he just got up out of his hospital bed and disappeared. Who is he?
Carter: It must be the Ashrak.
(O'Neill looks to Teal'c for translation.)
Teal'c: It means hunter.
O'Neill: A Goa'uld?
Carter: Yes. An assassin of the highest rank who carries out the orders of the System Lords.
O'Neill: Who's he here to kill?
Carter: Me.

Notes[]

  • This episode marks the first appearance of the Tok'ra in the series. They also played a major role in the two-part episode "The Tok'ra, Part 1" and "The Tok'ra, Part 2" of the same season, and become recurring allies throughout the remainder of the series.
  • Stargate Command first becomes aware that a Goa'uld symbiote can enter its host without leaving a scar; previously they did not know that this was possible.
  • This episode establishes that Dr. Fraiser's first name is Janet.
  • This episode establishes that people with Naquadah in their blood can sense Goa'uld symbiotes. As a result of her possession by Jolinar of Malkshur, Carter gains this ability along with Jolinar's memories, which she can't consciously access, and the ability to use Goa'uld technology such as the kara'kesh.
  • This episode marks the last appearance of Katie Stuart as Cassandra Fraiser. The character would again appear in later episodes, played by a different actress.

Goofs[]

  • After Teal'c visits Captain Samantha Carter, he exits the area by the use of the magnetic card. He has his card inverted, yet the door opens.
  • When the Ashrak is holding Jackson hostage, he shoots the glass in front of Major General George S. Hammond, leaving a bullet mark. However, when the glass is shown again, the bullet mark is gone.
  • After Teal'c shoots the Ashrak, Jackson falls forward 3-4m while shocked. Him trying to stand up would be contrary to him rolling down the ramp (without noise), so it is likely a positioning error.

Other languages[]
