Inertial dampeners, also known as inertial compensators are devices used on spacecraft to counteract the effects of sudden movements on ships (including acceleration, deceleration, sudden turns, et cetera) and decrease the amount of shudder from taking weapon hits. By creating an artificial gravity-field inside the spacecraft, a great amount of the otherwise occurring inertia is taken away. The dampeners should always be activated before taking flight, or the crew inside would face lethal G-forces and die. Inertial dampeners are equipped on Starships from various races.

Inertial dampeners by race

Ancient

All Ancient ships are equipped with powerful inertial dampeners including Puddle Jumpers, Aurora class warships, and City-ships to protect people on board from facing lethal G-forces. They can apparently be adjusted and they also use up a considerable amount of power if installed on a large ship. The Personal shield emitters are also equipped with inertial dampening properties. (SGA: "Hide and Seek", "Suspicion", "The Eye", "Critical Mass", "Grace Under Pressure", "Travelers")

Asgard

Bilskirnir-class ships are equipped with dampeners which activate to prevent internal explosion in an event that a power generator overloads. O'Neill-class ships are also equipped with those dampers. (SG1: "Thor's Chariot", "Nemesis")

Goa'uld

All Goa'uld vessels are equipped with inertial dampeners but are somewhat limited in effectiveness, at least to Humans. Such ships include Apophis' and Klorel's Ha'tak. (SG1: "Within the Serpent's Grasp")

Tau'ri

All F-302s are equipped with inertial dampeners, but they are only 90% effective, meaning pilots can still experience the effects of sudden movements. All Tau'ri battleships are equipped with inertial dampeners as well. (SG1: "Fragile Balance", "Lost City, Part 2") (SGA: "The Intruder")
