Lantean storm

Every 20 to 30 years, Lantea's ocean experiences temperature fluctuations (similar to El Niño on Earth) which can cause large hurricanes, some of which can cover up to 20% the planet's surface. These storms produce severe electrical activity, as well as high winds and intense rain. Were it not for Atlantis' shield, the city would be incapable of tolerating the extreme conditions produced by the storm and would ultimately fail. (ATL: "The Storm", "The Eye")

In 2004, such a storm struck a severely under-powered Atlantis. Fortunately, Drs. Mckay and Zelenka devised a plan to disable Atlantis' four grounding stations, and then channel the energy provided from the storm's intense electrical activity (in the form of lightning) down the corridors of Atlantis and into the shield generators, providing power to the city's shield long enough to save the city from certain destruction.
