The MP5 submachine gun was the standard issue submachine gun used by the SGC for the first four years of the program and is occasionally employed by some teams. Jack O'Neill and Samantha Carter used it as their standard main firearms during those years, sharing common 9mm NATO ammunition with M9 pistols Jack and Daniel Jackson carried as sidearms. Though primitive compared to Goa'uld weapons, they were capable of piercing Jaffa armor, after a few shots. It was generally replaced by the P90 submachine gun after the mission to P3X-888 (SG1: "Children of the Gods", "Scorched Earth")
Most MP5's used by Stargate Command are equipped with a fore-end bearing a white light and an optical sight. The 30-round magazines can be clipped together with a clamp to increase the speed with which the weapon can be reloaded after the first magazine. A sling is fitted allowing ready carry and firing from either shoulder.
[edit] Variants
In 1994, Jack carries an MP5 fitted with a fixed stock. Also seen in the hands of the NID is the MP5K, a shorter version with no stock, a shorter barrel, and a vertical fore grip. Finally, the Goa'uld created training versions of the MP5 in the form of Intar which were later used by the SGC for training. (SG1: "Stargate", "Rules of Engagement")
