Michael Shanks is an actor, writer and director who was born December 15, 1970, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He currently resides there with his wife Lexa Doig.

He met Lexa on the set of the Andromeda episode "Star-Crossed", and they married on August 2, 2003. They had a daughter (Mia Tabitha) born on September 13, 2004, and a son (Samuel David) born on March 19, 2006. He also has a daughter (Tatiana Shanks) with Vaitiare Bandera. His favorite villain is Anubis,[1] because he's so oily. He is also the only main actor other than Corin Nemec to have two of his characters, Daniel Jackson and Thor, meet Anubis in person.

  • From Seasons 1 to 5, Shanks appeared in the opening credits, second after Richard Dean Anderson, but after rejoining the show in Season 7, Shanks was given the "And.." credit, which lasted up to the final episode in Season 10. This credit is one he shares with British-born Canadian actor David Hewlett (Dr. Rodney McKay), who like Shanks, is also credited as "And" in the spin-off series Stargate Atlantis.
  • Shanks made his directorial debut with the Stargate SG-1 Season 4 episode "Double Jeopardy".
  • Shanks should not be confused with his namesake, the real-life archaeologist Michael Shanks.
  • Out of the main cast for Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and Stargate Universe, Shanks has played the most characters at 23.
