"They had just discovered their Stargate when what they called "the threat from the skies" came. Yet somehow they suddenly managed to build themselves an incredibly advanced weapon to defend themselves."
Daniel Jackson[src]

The Orbital weapon was a powerful device created on the planet Velona.

Overview

"Well, basically you have to start an overload in the reactor and then release it into the device. The problem is, once the overload is started, you have no choice but to release the energy or the reactor will explode."
Samantha Carter[src]

The weapon was of Ancient design and resided within a central structure where it was placed in a room. The center of the room was dominated by a large machine with a red crystal on the top, which served as the weapon itself. After sufficient power was provided, energy would gather around the crystal, with small emitters appearing in the open rooftop to channel the collected energy. The base of the machine contained panels which opened up and allowed access to the internal Control crystals, permitting the user to alter the weapon's settings. (SG1: "Ascension")

The precise manner in which the weapon functioned remains unknown, but it is presumably based on technology created by the Ancients before they ascended.

History

"The humans of Velona were under attack from the Goa'uld. I was prohibited from interfering, but I couldn't just watch them die. Shortly after they used the weapon to defend themselves, they started to plan the conquest of other planets using the technology that I gave them."
Orlin[src]

When the ascended being known as Orlin witnessed the Velonan people suffering under the siege of the Goa'uld, he took pity on them and provided them with the means of protecting themselves, in the form of a weapon capable of repelling the invading fleet. It was through this means that the people of Velona were able to defeat the attempts to enslave their world, but after the threat of invasion was dealt with the leaders of the Velonan people began to use the weapon as a means of ruthlessly subjugating other worlds. After these malicious acts, the Velonans were completely destroyed by the other ascended, as a lesson to Orlin, leaving the planet a dead world in the process.

Samantha Carter studying the device

After the Tau'ri discovered the planet during their travels through the Stargate, they learned of the weapon and studied it in an attempt to develop a method of defeating the Goa'uld. Orlin, wanting to prevent the same disaster that befell the Velonans, traveled to Earth and attempted to convince the Tau'ri to abandon their research. Despite convincing Major Samantha Carter of the danger, the research continued until the weapon was ready to be activated. A corporeal Orlin made use of a self-made Stargate to travel to Velona and shut the weapon down before the ascended could decide to kill the Tau'ri on the planet, and sacrificed himself to prevent the weapon's activation. The Others, feeling that Orlin had learned his lesson and atoned for his mistake, allowed Orlin to join to their ranks once again, and the weapon was permanently destroyed. (SG1: "Ascension")
