"When we first arrived here, we thought we had failed. We didn't achieve the mission on Destiny, but now, looking at all your smiling faces, at this beautiful new school, I can't help but feel a great sense of pride... And success."
Camile Wray[src]

The people of Novus are a race of humans who lived on planet Novus after their ancestors, the Destiny expedition from an alternate timeline, traveled back in time and settled there.

History[]

After Destiny was rendered barely livable in the aftermath of a drone attack, Colonel David Telford advocated abandoning the ship by dialing Earth within a Star. He went through the Stargate first and reached Earth, but solar instability caused the wormhole to change destination, sending everyone else nearly 2,000 years back in time. The crew wound up on a planet with a thin atmosphere and dust storms, which they abandoned in favor of the planet that would later become Novus. Early in their history, the people split into two factions: the Tenarans and the Futurans. Over the next 2,000 years, their society advanced and expanded into a thriving metropolis with advanced technology. The people began to establish a number of off-world colonies a few hundred years before the discovery of the black hole. (SGU: "Blockade")

When Novus was threatened by a rogue black hole, the Novans began establishing colony worlds to eventually evacuate to. At least three such colonies were established at different points. Eventually, the Stargate on Novus was lost in a volcanic eruption. Now unable to escape their dying world, the Tenerans and Futurans reconciled their differences and built massive Evacuation ships to ferry themselves from Novus to their nearest colony, a journey which would take hundreds of years. (SGU: "Common Descent", "Epilogue")

The Destiny expedition would eventually come upon one Novan colony, learning about the fate of their alternate selves. They agreed to take the colonists aboard and take them back to Novus, only to discover that planet was no longer habitable. Searching through the Tenaran archives, the expedition learned of their fate. After raiding the archive for any useful supplies, they took the colonists to the colony world the Novans were heading for. (SGU: "Common Descent", "Epilogue")

When Destiny needed to recharge in a blue giant, requiring the crew to be sent off the ship for the duration, they were sent to another Novan colony, which had been wiped out by the drones. (SGU: "Blockade")

Culture[]

The people of Novus are divided into two nations, Tenara and Futura, originating from the division of Destiny expedition survivors who sided with Colonel Everett Young and Dr. Adam Brody, respectively. The Futurans inherited Brody's belief that Dr. Nicholas Rush, the only one not to come through the Stargate, would eventually rescue them. Their culture worshiped him like a god. The Tenerans looked forward to the future, not dwelling on a rescue that might never come. They, in turn, eventually demonized Rush into a monster that stole souls. The Novans possess Kino footage recorded from the founding of Novus, knowledge which was revered in the same vein as the Dead Sea Scrolls on Earth. All Novans seem to be familiar with these videos, and could recognize their ancestors at a glance. While there was much tension between the countries for over 2,000 years, they came together when their planet was on the brink of destruction in order to escape it.

The Novans speak modern English, although they inherited some Mandarin because of Camile Wray. The grammar is the same, but their written language simplified into a phonetic version (e.g.,"atak" for attack and "markit" for market). Their technology is similar to modern Earth in many respects, although more advanced in some ways. They managed to invent starships when they needed to escape their dying world, but they weren't FTL-capable. Their computer technology was much more advanced, as a mere fraction of the Teneran archives comprised of volume of more than 900 exabytes (by comparison, the total amount of data estimated to comprise the Internet is around 500 exabytes).[1] (SGU: "Common Descent", "Epilogue", "Blockade")

Technology[]

Main article: Novus technology

The technology of the People of Novus is based on Tau'ri technology. The people have developed a variety of technologies at an astonishing pace, such as an advanced computer to an interstellar spaceship. The knowledge of the technology of their Tau'ri ancestors has been passed down for generations, via the Kino recordings.
