Plot

Ronon and Teyla arrive at a small village, looking for a group of travelers who claim to be Satedans. A local villager directs them to the inn and tavern. While Ronon checks the inn, Teyla goes to the tavern and begins asking the bartender the same question. A bar patron overhears and subtly threatens Teyla not to ask such questions openly. She attacks the patron, but two of his friends quickly intervene and restrain Teyla. Before they can hurt her, Ronon arrives and recognizes her assailants as fellow Satedans Tyre, Rakai and Ara and engages in a joyful reunion. The Satedans fought with Ronon in their war against the Wraith but were assumed to have been killed during a botched operation. They explain that while they were attacking a Wraith installation, they were ambushed and trapped in a series of underground caves. They then returned to find Sateda destroyed and wandered the galaxy afterwards. Ronon then returns to Atlantis to try and have them accept his friends.

Meanwhile, back on Atlantis, Sheppard and McKay discover that the IOA has nominated Carter to replace Weir as leader of the Atlantis team. Carter gives her farewell to Teal'c before leaving Stargate Command for Atlantis. Shortly after she assumes her post, Ronon arrives with his request to have the Satedans be brought to Atlantis. However, Carter refuses due to standing orders from the IOA that no outsiders be let inside Atlantis to keep its location secret. Angry, Ronon returns to tell his friends the bad news. They then try to recruit Ronon into joining them on their journeys, which points Ronon into the tough decision of choosing between his old friends from Sateda or his new ones in Atlantis. Ronon considers leaving Atlantis and voices his opinion to Carter. However, Carter discourages his thoughts about leaving Atlantis since he would be a security risk and would therefore have to be dealt with, implying that she may have to be forced to arrest or kill Ronon.

Meanwhile, the Satedans tell Ronon and the rest of the Atlantis team that they are planning to strike a secret Wraith research facility. They reveal that the recent offensive by the Replicators has spread the Wraith forces thin, and the facility is undermanned and vulnerable to assault. The only thing the Satedans need is a Jumper to insert them into the facility undetected and extract them. The Satedans also points out that the Wraith are working on a code to deactivate the Replicators. Sheppard, McKay, Teyla, and Ronon accompany them to the facility. Once they enter, The Atlantis team and the Satedans split up, with Ronon staying with the Satedans. Sheppard, McKay, and Teyla are ambushed by a group of Wraith, and Sheppard and Teyla are stunned and captured. McKay manages to escape and makes a run for it. Meanwhile, Ronon hears the gunfire and abandons the Satedans to help the Atlantis team, fighting through several Wraith. McKay then runs into the Satedans and is grateful to find them. Unfortunately, the Satedans reveal that they are actually working for the Wraith and stun McKay, letting the Wraith capture him. When he regains consciousness, the Wraith tell him that their war against the Replicators is going badly. They reveal that they were responsible for initially deactivating the Replicators' program instructing them to fight the Wraith, but their virus is no longer effective. They bring McKay to a captured Replicator and force him to find a way to reprogram the Replicators so that they would no longer be aggressive to the Wraith.

After the fighting, Ronon manages to escape the facility and return to Atlantis. He assumes that both the Atlantis team and the Satedans had been captured, and asks Carter for help. Carter agrees and organizes a rescue team. They then send in a Jumper as a decoy to draw away the Wraith Darts protecting the facility and infiltrate the building. Also Carter indicates that she'll accept Ronon's decision whatever it is.

During the fighting, they rescue Sheppard and Teyla. When they reach the room McKay is being held in, the Replicator breaks free from his prison. Ignoring the humans, the Replicator follows his programming and begins to kill all of the Wraith in the facility. Meanwhile, Ronon runs into the Satedans and discovers that they are working for the Wraith. They explain that they were captured and repeatedly tortured and brainwashed, by being fed on by the wraith until they were at the brink of death, and then given their lives back. They went through this several times until they swore allegiance to the Wraith. They want Ronon to join them. Angry, Ronon urges them to leave before he kills them, saying 'You are not Satedans'. They refuse to leave and Ronon engages the Satedans in brutal hand to hand combat.

After knocking out Ara and Rakai, he went for Tyre, who was better at fighting. Rakai suddenly gets up and takes out a knife. Ara said no weapons. Rakai then slits her throat and she goes down. Ronon takes his attention on Rakai. He manages to break his arm and takes his knife and had no choice but to jam it into Rakai's chest, killing him. Ronon, visibly upset turns his back on Tyre, saying 'Has there been enough killing?'. Tyre then decides to walk away. After the battle, Ronon acknowledges the Atlantis team as his true friends, and decides to stay on Atlantis.

Notes

  • Christopher Judge has a brief cameo as his Stargate SG-1 character Teal'c.[1] Judge is the last original Stargate SG-1 regular to appear on Atlantis; the other three characters of the original SG-1 team all appeared in Atlantis' first season, as have Hank Landry and George Hammond. This leaves the other three characters who have, at one time, been regular characters on "SG-1" - Cam Mitchell, Vala Mal Doran and Jonas Quinn.
  • Mark Dacascos makes an appearance in this episode as one of the Satedans named Tyre.
  • Ronon's painting is of the Satedan victory at Vetariss, which used to hang in the Satedan military museum, Ronon went back for it at some point. This was explained in a scene that didn't make the episode.[2]
  • This episode shares its title with a Star Trek: The Next Generation episode.
