Robert Carlyle is a Scottish actor, who made several movie and television appearances, most notably Trainspotting, 28 weeks later, The Full Monty, The World is Not Enough, Once Upon a Time and 24: Redemption. He was originally one of the shortlisted actors to play the eleventh Doctor in Doctor Who after the departure of David Tennant from the 2010 series. Doctor Who creator and head writer until 2010, Russell T Davies was surprised at Carlyle's decision to join Stargate on a Radio interview for BBC Radio 5 Live. Carlyle is of both Scottish and Irish ancestry.
