Spencer is a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, who was assigned to the Icarus Base in 2009.

2009[]

He and roughly 80 people were forced to evacuate Icarus Base during an attack against the base by three Lucian Alliance Ha'tak vessels. He ended up on the Destiny, an Ancient spaceship located several billion light years from Earth. One of his first duties aboard Destiny was to take inventory of their current supplies. During the search through many of the crates brought from Icarus Base, Spencer stole several energy bars, however, he was later caught and detained for his crime. (SGU: "Air, Part 1", "Water")
Later, Spencer, along with many other members of the expedition confronted Eli Wallace about the current situation aboard Destiny. They believed Eli to be on the "inside" with both Dr. Nicholas Rush and Colonel Everett Young and demanded that he relay anything he learns to the rest of the crew. When his name wasn't picked during a lottery to escape the doomed Destiny aboard an Ancient shuttle, he refused to accept his fate. He tried to rise people in revolt against Young, but was quickly knocked out by MSgt. Ronald Greer before things escalated. He was left lying on the Gate room floor and didn't regain consciousness until well after the shuttle had disembarked. (SGU: "Darkness", "Light")
While searching crew quarters for any evidence of missing water supplies, Spencer was found to be hoarding a few jugs of water and was caught with the energy bars he had stolen previously, in a knapsack. He was detained in a vacant room/cell until Colonel Everett Young returned from the planet "Hoth", at which time he was released with his one and only warning. (SGU: "Water")
Sometime later, Spencer was in his quarters taking the last pill of an unknown prescription, later discovered to be sleeping pills which he had become dependent on. He shook off Lt. Tamara Johansen's attempt at a conversation in the Destiny mess hall, raising a general concern on the mental health of the ship. While Lt. Matthew Scott was using the Long-range communication device to visit Earth, he assumed the duty of leading the physical fitness regimen. His style was very abusive, especially to Dr. Jeremy Franklin whom he belittled and his extreme approach caused Franklin to become ill. When it was discovered there was an Icarus-type planet that may get them home, he stated that he couldn't wait the year it would take them to reach the planet. His attitude deteriorating, he verbally assaulted Franklin after an innocent collision in a corridor. Fortunately he was prevented from physically assaulting Franklin thanks to the quick intervention of Colonel Everett Young. (SGU: "Life")
When he failed to show up for duty one morning, MSgt. Ronald Greer went to Spencer's quarters to wake him, only to find he had been shot in the head. Since the weapon was missing, the crew believed a murderer was on the loose, and the weapon was found in Colonel Everett Young's quarters. However, the death was later determined to be suicide, though Dr. Nicholas Rush took his weapon and placed it in Young's quarters to cast doubt on Young's leadership and give Rush more freedom with a research team. Young was exonerated when Eli found the Kino footage showing Spencer's suicide though the fact that Rush took the weapon to frame Young was kept solely between Young and Eli. (SGU: "Justice")
Alternate timelines[]
- In an alternate timeline, Spencer was among those that went to the Jungle planet to explore and retrieve food. He was among those killed during the night when the Squigglers attacked. (SGU: "Time")
- In another alternate timeline created by the previous one, Spencer was a member of the team that went to the planet to help retrieve one of the Squigglers so that they may use the venom to create an cure for the Hoth virus. He was likewise killed by the creatures while attempting to retrieve one. (SGU: "Time")
Personality[]
Much like MSgt. Ronald Greer, he was quick to anger and contemptuous of authority. Though less loyal and honorable than Greer, he demonstrated more control over his emotions, as - unlike Greer - he was not imprisoned while at Icarus Base. While aboard Destiny, Spencer demonstrated that he was selfish, dishonest, hostile towards civilians, and at times insubordinate in his chain-of-command. He harassed Jeremy Franklin on multiple occasions prompting Colonel Young to physically intervene and dress Spencer down. Prior to arriving on Destiny, he took prescription-strength sleeping pills and developing a dependency and/or addiction to them, and when they ran out aboard Destiny, his condition deteriorated. Shortly thereafter, he committed suicide. (SGU: "Light", "Water", "Life", "Justice")
