There seems to be something of a contradiction around the Ark of Truth. On the one hand, the Alterans describe it as "denying the very essence of self", thus implying that it is essentially a brainwashing device, but on the other hand, Adria implies that she cannot use it to convert unbeliever. Why? The only explanations I can come up with is that it cannot be used for indoctrination, but only to forcibly confront people with the logical flaws and unfounded assumptions of their beliefs - in which case, it shouldn't work on anyone who actually acknowledges that their beliefs cannot be proven (though such people probably wouldn't be fanatical enough to worry about). Do the Alterans really consider that so coercive?

I thaught of a similar problem which backs up your latter theory: the device was created to persuade the Ori to forget their (presumably made-up) gods, and yet still works for a different god (the Ori themselves to their human followers). This suggests that it converts people by showing them either a different set of morals which contradict those of their gods, or that is somehow dissuades them of the existance of any divine entity at all. Adria doesn't say she couldn't use it. She says that she doesn't want to use it because "it would be too easy". Not to mention that the only reason the Ark worked so quickly was because the priors were all linked. To use it to convert the unbelivers would be an incredibly slow process because you would have to do it to a small group at a time. --D Toccs (talk) (Contribs) 00:52, August 8, 2010 (UTC)

More literal translation?[]

Daniel mentions in the movie that the ark of truth is a loose translation of armeria verimas, which I believe would translate more literally as the weapon of truth (armeria having the same root as arma, Latin for weapon). Could someone more familiar with Latin confirm or deny it, or maybe point to some behind-the-scenes source, so we can possibly add this to the article? —141.158.115.19 07:24, October 25, 2010 (UTC)

Ok, "armeria" (which for all we know could've been e.g. "armoria" in the script) bears some resemblance to the French word "armoire", which means "wardrobe" (or other piece of furniture used to store stuff, like a cupboard, though it normally isn't used for a pantry). Now presumably, the French word has a Latin root (a lot of them do), which could well be something like "armoria" or "armeria" (although probably slightly different, Ancient is intentionally rendered as a sort of quasi-Latin, to show that Latin eventually evolved from it in-universe).

(Edit: Google says "armarium" is one of the words for "chest" in Latin. It might've originally arisen from "a place used to store weapons", as in arma + -(r)ium', the same way you have e.g. acquarium for a place you put water (acqua) into. But the etymology is only my personal conjecture, I haven't checked it against a Latin etymological dictionary.)

Thus, "armeria" or whatever the spelling is may well mean "container", "box", "chest", etc. in Ancient and still have a credible Latin root. Btw., while "armeria" does have the same root as "arma" (the root being "-arm-"), "-ia" is an English suffix for places where the stuff described in the root happens (e.g. a pizzeria, where pizza happens). It is also used in modern Italian, which may make it seem Latin, but Latin mostly used the suffix "-ium" to express this kind of meaning; "-ia" would have been the plural thereof (e.g. an armory in Latin is armamentarium, the plural would be armamentaria).

Error in the password.[]

Has nobody but me noticed that the password is a 7 letter word (7 symbols glow), yet the actual password used is only 6 letters long ("Origin")?

Yes that is correct but remember that it is an Ancient device so the word Origin needs to be translated into the Ancient equivalent for it to be the password.  Obviously the Ancient translation or one of its' derivatives is the 7 letter password. 203.167.214.129 22:50, May 28, 2013 (UTC)
