Taranis outpost

The Taranis outpost was an outpost built by the Ancients during the War with the Wraith. The outpost also served as a drydock for ships of the Ancient fleet, and one, the warship Hippoforalcus, remained behind when the Ancients fled back to Earth. The dialing device was similar to the one in Atlantis, and was actually located a distance from the Stargate. The outpost was located in the center of a supervolcano, and used a shield that was powered by geothermal energy. Unfortunately, the Taranians kept the shield running at all times after they learned Wraith had left their hibernation cycle prematurely. This resulted in the extreme use of geothermal energy, causing the supervolcano to become active again. The resulting explosion destroyed most the continent the outpost was on, as well as rendering the planet uninhabitable for centuries. (ATL: "Inferno")
