Tau'ri is a Goa'uld word that refers to The First Ones, more specifically humans from the planet Earth.

"There is a tale of a primitive world the Goa'uld discovered millennia ago. The Tau'ri. The First World where forms of this type first evolved. It is said the Goa'uld harvested among the primitives, some became Goa'uld hosts, others became Jaffa, the rest were taken as slaves and seeded among the stars to serve them."

The Tau'ri are humans that were seeded by the Ancients when they left in Atlantis, possibly to escape the Ori Plague. They returned after the end of the War with the Wraith. When they returned, some stayed among the humans, passing on the ATA Gene. (SG1: "Frozen", "Lost City", "Avalon")

Around the same time, the Tau'ri were discovered by the Goa'uld Ra and transported through the galaxy via the Stargate. Eventually, the Tau'ri rebelled, driving the Goa'uld away and burying the Stargate Ra had placed in Egypt. (Stargate) (SG1: "Moebius")

The Tau'ri eventually began exploring the Milky Way with the Stargate, and later Pegasus, making contact with the Tok'ra, the Asgard, the Jaffa, and the Athosians. They also came into conflict the Goa'uld, the Replicators, the Wraith, the Ori, and the Asurans. The Tau'ri have developed many technologies based on what SG teams have brought back from trips to other planets via the use of the Stargate on Earth. While Earth's level of technology prior even to Stargate travel far supersedes the level found on most planets throughout the galaxy (and indeed others), several races far surpass it. However, since the Asgard donated their entire database and latest technology to the people of Earth before they perished, and with the exploration of Atlantis and access its database, the technology of the Tau'ri will make an incredible leap forward in the near future, perhaps rivaling, or even surpassing, that of both the Ancients and Asgard, thereby making them the most powerful race in the known universe.
