The UMP .45 was a type of submachine gun used by the Tau'ri.
History
The UMP was used by Colonel Everett Young during the attack on Icarus Base. While recovering from his injuries, he used his UMP as an improvised crutch. During operations to recover water in the form of ice from Hoth, Lt. Matthew Scott used it to break the ice up. Young has also used it on the Jungle planet and during the Lucian Alliance invasion of Destiny. Young later used his UMP to help take down a Berzerker drone on a Novan colony. Design
The UMP (German-Universale Maschinenpistole, English-Universal Machine Pistol) in a submachine gun designed and made by Heckler & Koch.
The UMP is a blowback-operated, magazine-fed submachine gun firing from a closed bolt. As originally designed, the UMP is chambered for larger cartridges than other submachine guns like the MP5, to provide more stopping power against unarmored targets (with a slightly lower effective range) than the 9x19mm MP5 provides. A larger cartridge produces more recoil, and makes control more difficult in fully automatic firing. To mitigate this, the cyclic rate of fire was reduced to 600 rounds/min, which makes it one of the slower firing submachine guns on the market.
