The United States of America (USA) is a nation-state on Earth in their North American continent, south of Canada and north of Mexico. Their chief of state is the President who is elected on four year terms. At the time of the discovery of the Stargate, the United States was militarily, economically, and politically one of the most powerful Tau'ri nation and its leadership of the Stargate Program gives it the greatest influence on Tau'ri interactions with alien races. The United States was the first to make contact with extra-terrestrial human and alien civilizations and the first to develop an inter-stellar military capability, followed a few years later by the other four permanent members of the Earth-based United Nations Security Council. As of 2009, the United States possesses a majority of the existing Daedalus-class battlecruisers, giving them, by far, the most powerful Tau'ri starfleet. Only two of its planetary rivals, Russia and China, have attained comparable firepower.
