"When I was in Vietnam, I saw my best friend shot down. I know he survived, I saw his `chute open, radioed his position. But I never found out what happened to him. His body was never recovered, the Vietnamese never admitted they took him prisoner. For years, I kept thinking, that some day he's just going to walk through the door."
Lt. General George S. Hammond[src]

The Vietnam War was a conflict on Earth in Vietnam from November 1, 1955 to April 30, 1975.

History[]

Lt. General George S. Hammond served in the Vietnam War as a pilot. During a mission, he saw his best friend shot down. He knew he survived but never found out what happened to him. His body was never recovered and the Vietnamese never admitted that they took him prisoner. (SG1: "Revelations")

Major General Henry Landry also served in the Vietnam War. During a mission his plane was shot down near the Laotian border. He spent eight days eluding capture from North Vietnamese forces. He also met his wife Kim Lam while serving there. (SG1: "Uninvited")

Alternate timelines[]

In an alternate timeline accidentally created by SG-1, Jacob Carter was killed during the war in December 1969, when his daughter Samantha Carter was less than two years old. His plane was shot down by the Viet Cong. While he managed to bail out, his parachute failed. His wingman, Lieutenant George Hammond, was unsuccessful in his attempt to rescue him. He later brought Jacob's body home to his family. (Stargate SG-1: Moebius Squared)
