The Wormhole drive is a powerful form of faster-than-light travel developed for the city-ship of Atlantis by the Ancients, and based on the same wormhole technology of the Stargates.
Much like a person entering an active Stargate, the ship enters a wormhole and is demolecularized, allowing the vessel to travel between galaxies almost instantaneously. [1] However, the technology was abandoned by the Ancients due to its instability, the astronomical power requirements, and the complexity of the calculations (which if off by even a fraction would instantly vaporize the vessel using the drive). Radek Zelenka was able to complete Rodney McKay's calculations in order to perform a jump to Earth after Atlantis' hyperdrive failed at the edge of the Milky Way. (ATL: "Enemy at the Gate")
[edit] Behind the scenes
- Paul Mullie revealed that this drive was created simply as a means of getting Atlantis instantly to Earth. Though Brad Wright initially intended to incorporate the drive into the Stargate Universe series, it is currently only planned to be used in the upcoming Atlantis movie. [1]
- The drive is similar to the FTL (Faster than Light) Drives used on Ron Moore and David Eick's Battlestar Galactica, in the regard that it travels almost instantaneously between two points in space.
