X-699 is the name given to a Tau'ri project to develop Earth's first energy weapon.
This directed energy weapon was a fully functioning hand held plasma rifle, powered by a small Naquadah generator that was demonstrated to the scientific community with attempts being made to portray it as a flawed technology. However, when an assassin attempted to kill Colonel Samantha Carter during the demonstration, the X-699 was rigged to fire a single stun blast that neutralized the threat of the assassin. Vala was carrying a similar weapon that may be a finished version of the X-699 that is more developed and field ready than the original prototype. (Stargate: Continuum)
